Micro Fiction: Above It All

Hello my ghouls and ghosts!

I hope you all had a lovely New Year's Eve. For better or worse, 2018 is over and it's time to embrace 2019!

New Year's Eve is a strange day. You stand on a border of past and present, you can take the time to review all the things that happened to you in the past year -- the good, the bad, the crazy -- but you should also plan for the future.

And I wanted to take this day to acknowledge all the support I've received this past year from you, my readers. Throughout the year, you all have really helped me. Your support, comments, have helped support my writing so I wanted to thank each and every one of you for being there for me, for reading my writing, for supporting my career.I wanted to write a micro fiction on the very first day of the year (to start my year off right, I have big writing goals for 2019) -- though the horror genre can be dire, I wanted to remind everyone that even in the darkest times, sometimes you just gotta enjoy the people you're with and savour the smallest moments.

Thanks everyone!

Above It All

The champagne tasted like sour stars in my mouth as I stared out at the horizon, standing on the concrete balcony. Ash fell from the skies in a mockery of snow. Below, the hordes surged violently. The sky was filled with a bleary tangerine glow as the haze of the fires mixed with the sunrise. It was beautiful in a tragic way.

“New year, new me,” Mauve said, taking the bottle from me.

“Cheers to that.”

The sun rose past the cityscape.

“Today will likely be the last,” she murmured.

“Yeah,” I replied and took another gulp from the bottle.
